Girl Determined Making Goal a Success in Myanmar

Women Win Programmes Director Meg Smith spent a fantastic couple of weeks with Goal programme partner Girl Determined in Myanmar Sep. 30 – Oct. 11.

Girl Determined works with “Colorful Girls” aged 12-17 from mixed ethnic and religious backgrounds, living in poor peri-urban and rural communities. The risks these girls are facing range from school drop-out and child labour to gender based violence, early marriage and trafficking.

Meg traveled with a group of 12 female coaches to different programme sites around the country, conducting field visits, coaching workshops and other capacity building sessions. We were lucky to be accompanied by colleagues from Standard Chartered Myanmar, who were blown away by the impact of Goal on the Colorful Girls and are showing incredible commitment to the programme.

Girl Determined’s superstar coaches have done an amazing job picking up sport coaching skills and working with the girls. During the week we further developed these skills and created a framework to pass on these skills to emerging young leaders who will take on peer leader and coaching roles in the programme in the coming years.

Over 1,300 girls are currently participating in the “Colorful Girls Circles”, Girl Determined’s core programme. In the past 18 months, they have started implementing Goal with more than half these girls, integrating sport and financial literacy into their approach. Considering the barriers and obstacles that exist for girls’ participation in sport, they have come an incredibly long way!
